Wild Wonderment

On a chilly March morning after a few days of rain I made my way to the Upper Buffalo Wilderness of Arkansas. I was eager to photograph a few of the many waterfalls in the state; however, one of the wonderful things about photography and exploring the outdoors in general is that you never know what nature may present to you. In this case it was a herd of nearly 70 Elk in the fields of Boxley Valley. At that moment my plans went out the window and I spent the morning photographing these incredible animals. The highlight shown here was seeing this precious interaction between a spike yearling and majestic bull.

I thought this old twisted tree on the edge of the Sam's Throne overlook was very interesting especially as it cradled this fleeting sunset.

Cosmic Tree

"COSMIC TREE" City Rock Bluff, Arkansas
I took notice to this tree that stands near the edge of City Rock Bluff while the stars began to come out. Standing there with its branches beneath the cosmos It reminded me of the Yggdrasil tree from Norse Mythology. Similar trees are found throughout cultures in many religions and mythologies. Known as the cosmic tree, world tree, tree of life, and so on. It serves as a connection between three planes (The heavens, the underworld and our terrestrial world). Its branches reaching for and supporting the heavens, while the trunk meets the earth, and roots grip and dig deep in the soil below.

Yesterdays drizzly and dreary overcast finally cleared out just in time for me to catch these remaining clouds reflecting off the White River as the sun set and the bluffs shadow slowly blanketed the valley below.

At Great Falls, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge. The Patowmack Canal offers a glimpse into the early history of this country. Great Falls Park has many opportunities to explore history and nature, all in a beautiful 800-acre park only 15 miles from the Nation's Capital.

"The Watcher" Pettigrew State Park, North Carolina
I really love this shot because of how the owl perfectly blends in with its surroundings. The day I took it I was driving around Phelps Lake in Pettigrew State Park trying to find the best spot for the coming sunset. When a park ranger driving in front of me suddenly did a u-turn and signaled me to stop. At the moment I thought maybe my sporadic driving (pulling in and out of every lookout) had made me seem suspicious or something, but then the ranger asked if I had been bird watching? He then showed me this barn owl up the tree. I was very surprised and couldn't express how grateful I was for his random act of kindness. People and nature never cease to amaze me.

The glory whole is one of our states most popular and unique waterfalls but here recently I haven't been able to see it flowing. So after the recent rain I made the little hike down and although still not at its full potential there was still enough of a spray to get some nice rainbows!
